Where it began…

Here’s a story of a lovely lad…wait. That’s not right. This is not the story of a lovely lady…Well, I guess that’s not accurate either. I happen to think my wife is stunning. Okay, let me start again.

This is the story of how my wife and I started our journey towards financial freedom.

I love my job. And I think that’s a rare thing in this world today.

You see, I get to be a youth pastor. I realize working with other people’s teenaged children all day may not seem like a sane occupation, but as I said, I love my job. I love watching ideas connect in the minds of young people. I love to see abstract ideas take concrete shape in their lives as they make decisions based on the principles we’ve discussed in class. And I absolutely love seeing young people not only face the challenges that this day and age has to offer but conquer them.

With that being said, there is something about it that leaves a little to be desired. And don’t judge me too harshly, but here it is – the pay.

You see a few years ago my wife and I were dreaming about all the far off places we want to eventually visit and minister after we retire. But as we were making plans, it hit us. And by “it” I mean our savings account. And by “savings account” I mean the lack thereof.

We’re pretty frugal, but no matter how many coupons you clip, no matter how tight the budget, there just isn’t much left over to sock away for that proverbial rainy day.

Yup, being a youth pastor is absolutely amazing. But it doesn’t pay all that well.
So, my wife and I and the Lord set out to figure out how we could earn a little extra to put away for our future dreams.
And that’s what this blog is really about….our journey to being able to afford serving missions in our later years.
